Do you have the holy spirit?

Many think that they have the holy spirit because they have received prophesies or have spoken in tongues or have experienced other manifestations -- but are these really signs of the spirit? or are these manifestation from a different spirit?  Yeshua said that many would claim to be Christians and display great manifestations such as the gift of prophesy, the ability to cast out demons, and the ability to perform miraculous healings; but these will not enter into the kingdom of God.  Only those who are obedient to God will enter into the kingdom.

21"Not every one who says to me, 'Lord, Lord!' will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, only those who do what my Father in heaven requires. 22On that Day, many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord! Didn't we prophesy in your name? Didn't we cast out demons in your name? Didn't we do many miracles in your name?' 23Then I will tell them to their faces, 'I never knew you. Get away from me, you who violate the Torah.'" [Matthew 7:21-23]

To whom does God give his holy spirit?

We are his witnesses of these things; and also the holy spirit, which God has given to those who obey him. [Acts 5:32]

If you are not first obedient to God, you cannot receive the holy spirit.  Yeshua said that the holy spirit would lead us to all truth [John 16:13].  He also said that God's word is truth [John 17:17]. He also said that we must live by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God [Matthew 4:4]

Is the spirit leading you to study the word of God [his Torah]?

Study that you may present yourself to God as one worthy of his approval, as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, because he deals straightforwardly with the word of truth. [2Timothy 2:15 ]

Ask yourself this question: Does the spirit lead me to obedience to God's commandment?  If the spirit leads you away from obedience to any of God's commandments [James 2:10; 1John 5:3] then it cannot be of God.  If you are not keeping God's commandments to begin with he is not going to give you his spirit.

And we are his witnesses of these things and also the holy spirit, which God has given to those who obey him.  [Acts 5:32]

There are many false spirits that are mistaken for the holy spirit.

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but examine the spirits to determine if they are from God: because many false prophets have gone out into the world. [1John 4:1]
